Abstrakt
An entirely new type of rhombic fish scales has been discovered by Dr. A. Martinsson, Uppsala, in the Middle Ludlovian Hemse Beds of Gotland. Their morphology, histology, and growth are described. The scale material is referred to a new genus and species, Andreolepis hedei. The majority of the morphological, histological, and morphogenetical characteristics match those of Devonian ganoid scales (Palaeonisciformes); however, the scales of the new genus have no ganoine layer. Some histological characteristics are reminiscent of the structure of the spines and scales of the Silurian acanthodian Nostolepis. Only with the discovery of more complete or intact specimens can the new genus be placed in its proper systematic position.
