Compressocoenites visbyensis, a new coenitid from the Llandovery of Gotland

Compressocoenites visbyensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Silurian Lower Visby Marl of Gotland. It is characterized by an encrusting growth form and the presence of a well-developed lunarium. The microstructure consists mainly of laminar calcite, with a middle granular layer within the interzooecial walls. The affinities of the coenitids are briefly discussed in relation to bryozoans and corals.
