Abstract

Well-preserved specimens of the ichnofossil Zoophycos were found in upper Eocene beds of Afales Bay (northern Ithaca, Ionian Isles, Greece). Detailed studies of one burrow permit classification of the Zoophycos animal as a polychaete annelid. The genus Zoophycos Massalongo, 1851, is considered to comprise different sorts of traces. Therefore it is proposed to restrict the name Zoophycos to the species Zoophycos brianteus (Villa, 1855).
