Abstract

The island Osmussaar in the Finnish Gulf off the Estonian coast has apparently been displaced during the Glaciation Period by pivoting counter-clockwise through 17io in a horizontal plane. This is indicated by the observed rotation of the rhegmatic network of joints and by the discrepancy of the present position of the island relative to the surrounding sea bottom. Subsequent to the shifting the ordinary joint pattern had been formed again, thus demonstrating the perpetuity of the formation of rhegmatic joints in the earth's crust which obviously follows predetermined directions.
