Identity of the bivalve Modiodonta gothlandica (Hisinger) from the Silurian of Gotland

The type specimen of Modiola gothlandica Hisinger, 1831 is referred to the new genus Modiodonta. The species exhibits features similar to both extant endobyssate mytilids and living, non-byssate true burrowers. Accordingly, Modiodonta gothlandica was probably a weakly byssate, semi-infaunal filter feeder with its burrowing ability intact.
