Abstract

Tallinn and Helsinki constitute a business environment of nearly 1.5 million inhabitants, which is closely linked to the movement of goods and passangers between the two countries. Estimated increase of inhabitants in both cities only adds to the volume of passangers and freight traffic [9]. The proposed Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel is an underground link between the two capitals, which unlike ship and air traffic is not dependent on weather.

Fixed connection between Tallinn and Helsinki must be linked to important public transport nodes of both countries. Travel time between the two cities should be within 30 minutes. The tunnel configuration takes into account the speed of the high-speed train (250 km/h).

The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis is to choose the best available technology for the Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel, based on available geological data and, depending on this, also select the tunnel configuration.

This Bachelor’s thesis is directed to designing drilling and blasting parameters on the Estonian geological cross section of the tunnel.

Drilling and blasting parameters of Estonian geological cross section are evaluated in two baccalaureate collaborations. In addition to this work, which assesses the parameters of drilling and blasting works through the water-saturated Ediacara sandstone, Kristo Martin Vinni examines the possibilities of tunneling through Lontova deposit blue clay and granite crystalline base.
