Revision und Typisierung des Genus Paleofavosites Twenhofel, 1914

The type species Favosites asper D’Orbigny, 1850 (as described by Lonsdale, 1839, being a minor variant of Favosites alveolaris) was attributed to the genus Paleofavosites by Twenhofel. Misinterpretation and lack of knowledge always led to an incorrect synonymity with Paleofav. alveolaris (Goldfuss, 1829). The present revision intends to exhibit a clear typification as well as a revised description of the holotype of the type species. In connection with this, the species P. alveolaris and P. rugosus are described. As a result of this revision, the specimen of the major variant as described by Lonsdale and since then in synonymity with P. alveolaris (Goldfuss) has to be attributed to Paleofav. rugosus Sokolov, 1951.
