Abstract
Determination of depth criteria applicable to the study of ancient limestones can only be based on an understanding of modern carbonate sedimentation. Since oölites and micrites are frequently used as depth criteria in stratigraphic studies, our knowledge of their Recent counterparts is examined in some detail. Other possible criteria are discussed less fully, including algal stromatolites, algal bores, grapestone, cross-strata, sorting, reefs, and solution in deep water.
