Abstract

In the years since the last review (Seilacher, 1970), the value of trilobite burrows to date otherwise barren epicontinental sandstone sequences has been corroborated and extended into the Lower Carboniferous. Newly recognized Cruziana ichnospecies come from now dispersed fragments of Gondwana (Australia, North Africa, South America). With this method, the Acacus Sandstone of Southern Libya can be shown to be a diachronous unit that prograded northward from Early to Late Silurian times.
